Vest: J Crew Denim Vest in Workwear wash, sz. XS
Tee: J Crew Factory (added embellishment by me), sz. XS
Skirt: LOFT Factory Maxi, sz. XS
I was able to snag this denim vest a few weeks ago for an unbelievable deal! J Crew was having that "Instant Gratification" sale which was ending, and the 40% off sale promo was beginning, and I was able to grab it up during the promo transition when both were in effect. With the double promos it came to under $40!! It pays to be a night owl sometimes because I'm often able to snag double promos from places like J Crew and Boden that way. I was also able to grab the Cafe Trousers in navy for like $35, and they are now back to full price. Ha! Take that, J Crew!
The amazing deal on the vest is why I was willing to risk trying something that clearly screams 'trend' to me. I've been seeing a lot of denim vests lately, and usually all I think of when I see them is junior high. My junior high. In the very early 90's. But, I've been able to break my association of regular denim jackets with the 80's and 90's and now wear them all the time, so I'm hoping I can do the same with denim vests. The do have a certain charm. And a quite a bit a practicality for where I live. I love the look of a denim jacket over almost anything, but it's often too hot for anything long sleeved here in tropical Texas. A denim vest is a nice compromise. It gives the look of a denim jacket, without the smothering hotness.
So the review:
I wear a sz. XS in the J Crew Nolita (sz.2 in perfect shirts, XS in tees and sweaters), so that's the size I went with in this vest. I actually think it fits a touch looser than the Nolita. Although, that could be because without the sleeves, the shoulders fit differently, and that's the part that's tight on the Nolita for me. I can easily button this if I wanted, too. So I'd say if you're familiar with the Nolita, take your same size.
Fabric is the same mid-weight denim as my Nolita (which is from 2011). I like all the pockets, and prefer the medium 'vintage' wash with a piece like this. Any darker of a wash and I think it'd look a bit dorky. But so far I like it. I would never, ever wear it with denim jeans as I try to avoid the Texas Tuxedo look if at all possible, but so far I like it with skirts and dresses. I'm not sure if I can pull if off with a sleeveless top or dress though. I've seen it on others and like the look, but at some point I have to question function. What function does a denim vest play when it's 95* out and the person is wearing shortie-shorts and a tank top, you know? Anyway, this should play well with fall looks. I'm thinking of trying mine with cords and a turtleneck maybe.
Super happy about my purchase considering what I paid. It's a nice casual piece that (hopefully) will continue to be on trend for the next few seasons. For full price I'd have to think twice, but on sale I think I'll be able to get my money's worth out of this one.
