OOTD: 2/21/13

Top: Forever 21 Pelplum Top, sz. med
Skirt: J Crew (old) sz. 2
Belt: Forever 21
Shoes: Ellen Tracey
Bracelet: eBay
Bag: LV Evora

So this is my first attempt at peplum. I know the trend has been around for a season or two now, but I've been very hesitant to try it because quite honestly I don't think I have the "right" figure for it. I have a much more linear/straight figure without much of a defined waist or curves. Or if you really want to nit-pick it's more close to an inverted triangle with my shoulders/chest being the widest part of my body, and everything narrows down for there. I think peplum is far betters suited to someone with an hourglass figure.

Anywho, trying to wear something that draws attention to my natural waist only serves to pull the eye to my barrel shaped rib cage. Plus, most peplum tops are cut to fit a more hourglass shape (or at least body shapes that have a defined waist), so sizing is tough. If I get a top to fit around my waist (which is about 27") it always is too big elsewhere. Bu tI stumbled upon this top at F21, and it actually didn't fit too bad. And at less than $10, I figured it was worth the financial risk to try this trend I wasn't so sure about.

On another note, this fantastic J Crew pencil skirt is making it's debut. I was able to snag it last year, new with tags, off eBay for a steal. It is like my holy grail of pencil skirts, and I've been searching for it for years. Years. This is by far one of my all time favorite prints from J Crew. I have the sweater and silk maxi dress in the same print, and had been stalking eBay for the skirt for what seemed like forever.

But then when I finally got my grabby hands on it, I didn't want to wear it. It was just so pretty hanging there, all pristine with the tags still on it! I tried it on at least once a month, and created dozens of different outfit options for it. And then I would chicken out and hang it back in the closet. I guess I just was waiting for that perfect moment to showcase it.

Now that it's been hanging in my closet for over a year, I finally realized it was wasted potential just hanging there. Such pencil skirt perfection needs to be shared with the world! Hopefully I won't wait another whole year to wear it again!

    1. Yes--it's the Florentine print, and I think it was from 2008.

  6. Actually, I think a peplum top is most flattering on a linear figure like yours. I am an hour glass and I feel like peplums exaggerate my hips in an unattractive way.

    1. Agreed! I'm an hourglass I think (5'6", 34-27-36, 127 lbs) and this is what I feel like when I try on peplum garments:

    2. I suppose that is true- it most certainly gave me curves where I never had any before! Now if only retailers would cut the peplum tops to fit a non-hourglass shape like mine, it'd be perfect!

  7. Completely disagree that it looks bad on you. I read that peplum is most suitable for inverted triangle body shapes. The ruflles add more contour and you look absolutely amazing!! More of these please!!

    1. Well, that's me for sure! The peplum definitely give the illusion of hips and curves I've never had! I bought 2 other colors of a similar peplum top from F21 (white and navy) so I have a few outfit options for the future!

    1. Thanks! My glasses are Michael Kors, and I got them about a year ago. Not sure the turnover rate on frame styles, but the style # is MK686 206.

  10. yes, I have the exact opposite figure from yours.... my peplum story is that I tried one on in Macy's and it fit almost the same in S, M and L! Though I usually wear a S, I got the L, because while it still had the peplum, instead of flaring out like a ballet tutu and over- emphasizing the hips, it hung straighter...not sure if that helps anone else. It looks fine on you. I like your glasses too, though since I am catching up and reading a few months here, I know another commenter just said how you should "ditch them." You really have a lot of different looks and just changing your hair or glasses can have a dramatic effect.

    1. Maybe I should try sizing up as well--good idea! I don't like the tutu look either. i wish it was some fashion thing that drove the wearing of glasses, but really my thought process is: am I lecturing today? -Glasses optional. am I giving a test today? Glasses necessary (to see the honest students not cheat). At least I have a few frames to choose from to give me different looks! Love the BOGO at my eyeglass place!
