OOTD: 2/7/12 Review: J Crew Paley Pants

Sweater: Lands End Canvas Heritage Cardi, sz. XS
Tee: Jason Wu for Target, sz. XS
Pants: J Crew Bi-Stretch Paley Pants, sz.2
Shoes: Coach
Bag: J Crew Frankie Bag

So, this is the unfortunate aforementioned defective top from Jason Wu that has now been returned to Target. Such a shame. It was a cute tee that I could have made many lovely outfits with. Oh well. Lesson learned. I was easily able to return the tee to Target, so at least it turned out well.

The J Crew Paley pants are a recent acquisition from J Crew. I think I got them during their 40% off sale a while back. They're nice. I liked them enough to go back for a 2nd pair in another color. The fit reminds me of the J Crew Minnie they had in the summer-weight Italian wool. If anyone's familiar, that particular pair of Minnies from last summer fit a bit more loose than the other versions of the Minnie. Anyway, the Paley is similar, and I like them a lot more than the tighter fit Minnie. I've been liking slimmer leg pants recently, but I still feel a little iffy about wearing the regular Minnies to work. They are cut very slim, and I feel self-conscious in front of a class.

But the Paley is much better. Slim, but not clingy. The leg is cut straight, slim, and narrow, and there is no poufing or pleats like the J Crew Elan (which I also have and don't care for.) The rise is Favorite fit I believe, which also makes them a little more appropriate for work compared to the Minnies. The wool is a very nice weight. In a warmer climate, it can be worn year round. The Paley has a front zip as well, which I prefer to the side zip Minnie (Is it just me, or does anybody else struggle in the restroom when wearing a belt with the Minnies?)

I took a sz. 2, which is my typical J Crew pant size. Sometimes in J Crew's slim fitting pants (like the Toothpick or Pixie) I have to size up, but I found the Paley true to J Crew's sizing. Overall, if you're looking for a modern, slim leg pant, I found the Paley to be a much better work alternative to the Minnie.

  1. The Frankie bag is the one that got away. Every time I see it I regret it more. I always liked black with pale pink so Parisian or something..

  2. Thanks for the review of the Paley pants! I have not tried them on yet, but will next time I get a chance. I feel exactly the same way as you do about the Minnies. Glad you were able to return the Wu tee!

  3. ajc- I was able to nab the Fankie on eBay 2 summers ago I think. I still see them pop up from time to time. And I love black and light pink too. I think ballet when I see the combo.

krb- I have 2 colors of the Paley now, and I really like them! I wish they'd make them in more colors for spring!
