OOTD: 2/22/12

Sweater: Talbots Flyaway Cardi, sz. XS
Tee: Boden, sz. US 4
Skirt: Talbots Linen Chambray Pencil skirt, sz.2
Shoes: Butter
Bag: Kate Spade

The photo quality here is a little off here. I took about 3 days worth of OOTD pictures before I realised I had a huge fingerprint smudge on my camera lens. Oh well. It's still workable.

I found this skirt from Talbots for only $12 at TJ Maxx a few weeks ago! Occasionally I stumble across the random Talbots, LOFT, J Crew, and even Anthropologie item at these type of stores. Hence, why I'm a big fan of the Marshall's/TJ Maxx family. I also have the best luck with shoes and handbags there and have gotten quite a few lovely Coach and Kate Spade bags and shoes for amazing deals.

Sure, it takes a little bit of work sifting thru all the racks and aisles, but it usually is rewarding. Clothes can sometimes be iffy --I wonder where all these items are coming from anyway-- but I can always find lovely house wears, linens, and clothes for Child too. Last month I was able to nab a set of Kate Spade sheets  for our bed for under $20!!

I've even converted Husband into a fan. He buys all his own clothes and he's a little *ahem* cheap. He gets very excited when he can find 'the good stuff' for next to nothing, and we've made somewhat of a ritual of taking a Fraiday afternoon at least once a month to go shopping together.

Is anyone else a fan of TJ Maxx or Marshall's?

  1. LOVE TJ Maxx! I recently found the Kate Spade glasses necklace there and I also got a Talbots skirt recently. That Talbots skirt looks great on you!

  2. I love Marshalls and TJ Maxx too! I picked up a striped dolman-sleeve top from there recently that I just adore--it's SO comfortable. Do you know about Daffy's? I just discovered it this weekend in Philadelphia--it's another chain, I think--with similar pricing and a less generous return policy to Marshalls and TJ Maxx. However, they have a final sale floor where everything (at least when I was there) was 75% off the initial clearance markdown... I bought a Laundry by Shelli Segal dress for $18, down from the Daffy's clearance price of $71 and the original retail price of $200+. I don't think it was worth $70, as the material is just standard polyester with a little bit of pilling, but the design is quite dramatic and definitely worth <$20.

  3. I never find "the good stuff" at Marshall's/TJ Maxx. I suppose I should try a little harder. However, about 2 years ago I found a knock off of Anthropologie's field cardigan and I didn't get it because the buttons were a very BRIGHT gold. I'm talking Vegas show girl bright. I'm still kicking myself on that one. I could have easily replaced the buttons.

  4. I haven't been to Marshalls or TJ Maxx in forever. I never seem to find the good goods. I think it would help to know what day shipments arrive. I'll be the hardcore shoppers know. Love that bright blue on you.

  5. Katie- I need to start looking at the jewelry more then! I always forget it's there because I get sidetracked by the handbags!

Keilexandra- I think Daffy's may not be in the region where I live? I'd never heard of it before. Too bad though, because it sounds like there are some great deals!

ginastorm- I think there must be a learning curve to shopping at places like that. Certain locations have different things I've noticed. The TJ Maxx by me always has great bags, linens, and housewears, but that's it. But in the TJ Maxx 20 minutes away, they always have the best designer jeans and shoes. I frequent both stores so much I've learned what to keep my eye out for in each place.

gigi- I agree. I'll bet the store employees don't want shipment dates getting out though, because then they get first dibs on all the good stuff. Maybe I need me a part time job at TJ Maxx! Hmmmm......

  7. Anon- Hi! Thanks for asking! Because I'm lazy I'm going to refer you to a post I did last year on the exercise part ;P
    http://egyptomaniac57.blogspot.com/2011/02/weighing-in-on-exercise-and-weight.html
For the past year I've rowed for 45 min 5 days a week and lifted weights (focusing on a different body part) 5 days a week as well-- no skipping, no missed workouts. I'm afraid it's rather hardcore.
As to diet, I'm vegetarian, non-dairy. I eat a very high fiber, whole grain, low fat diet (nothing more than 5 grams of fat per serving). Honestly, it's pretty restrictive--No white rice, white bread, potatoes, pasta, meat, no eating out, no alcohol, no sweets. I'm aware what I do is not for everyone, and definately you need willpower of steel it seems. But surprisingly, I've found once you get that stuff out of your house and system, you don't even miss it. And as to excercise, I actually feel worse if I miss a work out.
The thing is to just take little steps. I didn't start all of this overnight. I changed just one thing at a time, over years to get to the point I'm at now. Even small steps make a big impact, and one change can help lead to others!
